Peepal trees are sacred in Hinduism, Jainism, and Buddhism. According to the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna says, “Of all trees, I am a Peepal tree, and among the sages, I am Narada. Among the Gandharvas, I am Citraratha, and among perfect beings, I am Kapila.”

The plant has heart-shaped leaves and is medium-sized. Ficus religiosa, also known as the bodhi tree, is an Indian deciduous tree that thrives in hot, humid climates. 

The plant grows best outside but can also be grown indoors. Although the plant can be grown in a pot, it prefers full sunlight.

The Peepal tree offers many medicinal benefits. Leaf juice is used to make eardrops. The bark of this plant is useful for healing swellings of the neck and glands. It is believed that chewing the roots of a Peepal tree can prevent gum disease.

Care guide

Sunlight: Most Peepal plants enjoy bright indirect or filtered light. But bright, direct light may result in burning of the leaves and leaf loss.

Water: Always check the top of the soil before watering. When the topsoil is wet, do not water it as this indicates the plants have enough moisture. If the soil feels dry to the touch, it needs water

Soil: This plant prefers Well-drained, rich and humusy soil.

Temperature: Peepal trees cannot tolerate low temperatures or drafts. They require temperatures above 60 F and actually prefer higher temperatures of at least 70 F.

Fertilizer: During the growing season, feed slow-release pellets. Fertilize every two months in the fall and winter, and once a month in the spring and summer.

Growing tips for Peepal bonsai

• Put the plant in natural indirect bright Light.
• While watering, poke your finger or small stick into the soil to check the moisture.
• Water only when topsoil (1-2 inches) feels dry to touch.
• Do not re-pot for min. 2 weeks after receiving the plant.
