This plant features leaves that are yellow near their vein, abruptly turning a dark green toward the edge of the leaf. This amazing transition of dumb cane is random, even within the same leaf, creating ribbons and spots of yellow and green along the leaf’s body.

Dumb cane plant

Everything about the dumb cane plant is dramatic. Native to the tropics of Central and South America, this plant has huge variegated leaves.

The plant’s name comes from the fact that the liquid that drips from its leaves can cause a temporary loss of speech if consumed. For this reason, the plant is not recommended for homes with small children. Dumb cane is a grown-up plant for grown-up homes.

Care guide

Temperature: Dumb cane grows best when the temperature it is exposed to is between 65-75 ºF (18-23 ºC). Outside of this temperature, growth will continue to reduce.

Light: In light, it prefers bright, indirect sunlight. This plant will accept lighting conditions up to full shade. However, too much sun exposure will burn the leaves.

Watering: For the best results, keep the plant’s top inch of soil moist at all times. Dumb cane will tolerate extended periods of watering neglect, but the leaves will begin to shrivel.

Soil: Dumb cane plant is not picky about its soil conditions. It can grow in almost any soil mix except sand and orchid mixtures. For best results, use a one-to-one mixture of potting soil and perlite.

Fertilizer: To encourage plants to grow faster, provide a full-strength mixture of standard, balanced fertilizer once a month. Over-fertilization will cause the dropping of leaves.
