Spanish Moss Air Plant (tillandsia usneoides)

Spanish moss is a long, stringy air plant that grows in bunches and may be hung from almost any surface. This plant is a flowering plant, not a moss, that is planted to give any place a tropical atmosphere. It’s common to see it dangling from tree branches and baskets, and it makes for a lovely, natural show.

This Spanish moss air plant has long strands that are easy to divide. The thin leaves range in color from whitish-grey to green, and it does produce flowers, but they are few. The yellowish-blue flowers last about four days and have a lovely aroma that attracts pollinators.

Tillandsia usneoides is an epiphytic air plant that may sit, anchor, and grow on other plants but does not feed or consume the energy of the host plant. Simply plant a clump of Spanish moss in your outdoor or indoor garden.

Caring Tips

  • When it comes to growing Spanish moss air plants inside, humidity is quite vital. Spray it from all sides to keep it from drying out in the middle or rear drives.
  • Spanish moss air plant does not require fertilizer; rather, it acts as a fertilizer. If it’s not growing well or is discoloring, spritz it with compost tea diluted half-and-half with water.
  • Simply cut off the ends using a sharp instrument to prune them back longitudinally. Over pruning leads to the production of side-shoots; thus, avoid it.
  • In the summer, give Tillandsia usneoides plant some shade and increase the amount of water you give it. In warmer summers, soaking the plant is also beneficial.

Growing Instructions for Spanish Moss Air Plant

  • The majority of the time, this plant prefers indirect but bright illumination.
  • Water and humidity are ideal for Spanish moss. Water only when the plant is absolutely dry, and when it needs it, give it a good soaking from the top.
  • Good airflow is what Tillandsia usneoides plants like over the soil. It should be able to sway in the wind.
