Yellow Moon Cactus Plant

A cutie “mutant” cactus, this one is actually made of two species: Gymnocalycium (the sicon) and a rootstock cactus such as Hylocereus. Most often, the term “moon cactus” is used in relation to the yellow and orange varieties, but red varieties can also be used.

Gymnocalycium mihanovichii, also called Yellow Moon Cactus, Ruby Ball, or Hibotan Cacti, are attractive red-yellow bicolor indoor plants.

Care Guide

Light: The moon cactus is tolerant of more shade than many cacti and dislike direct sunlight. By contrast, the stock green cacti on the bottom enjoy the light. For yellow moon cactus, look for a bright area, but not so bright that the color of the top begins to wash out.

Soil: A rich, fast-draining cactus mix with a low pH is highly suitable for the moon cactus plant. Also, make sure you meet the soil needs of the host cactus on the bottom.

Water: Let the soil mix become nearly dry between waterings, after that water thoroughly. The moon cactus should not be sitting in marshy soil for more than a day or so; good drainage is important. During the summer months, your moon cactus plant may need frequent watering. Potted yellow moon cactus will only need weekly watering. Watering in the colder months is unnecessary, but mist occasionally.

Temperature: The care of moon cactus is similar to succulent or cactus. A moon cactus plant prefers warmer temperatures but needs a minimum of 48 F. (9 C.) to survive.

Fertilizer: You do not need to regularly feed your moon cactus plant, but fertilize your plant with a cactus fertilizer every month during its growing season (April to September)

Growing tips for Yellow Moon Cactus

• Keep moon cactus plants in medium-light locations, out of direct sunlight.
• Natural light is best, but some cactus plants can also thrive in office fluorescent light.
• Keep the soil moist at all times.
• Avoid overwatering yellow moon cactus.
• Do not allow your plant to stand in water.
• Avoid over wetting plant leaves.
• Remove waste and dead leaves and stems from time to time.
• Repot the received plant in a 4 to 5-inch pot with a good soil mix
